Artist Statement
My paintings bring together familiar objects, spaces and fragments of everyday reality in scenes that never quite existed. I am interested in the strange sense of recognition these constructed images can evoke, and how something unfamiliar can nevertheless feel as though we have encountered it before. What feels familiar is different for each viewer, shaped by individual memories and associations.
There are no figures in these paintings, yet I think of them as a kind of portraiture. Human presence emerges indirectly through objects, spaces and the traces or structures we leave behind. Through composition, light and colour, these fragments are brought into a new visual order, while remaining open enough for the viewer to enter with their own experience.
Each painting develops through a process of digital experimentation in which I construct imaginary scenes before carrying them into oil. My background in analogue photography, painting and architectural visualization informs my attention to composition, light and spatial structure, while painting gives these constructed images a physical and singular presence.
BIOGRAPHY
Áron Lőrincz (b. 1979, Budapest) is a Hungarian painter based in Budapest. His visual practice has developed across painting, photography, digital image-making and architectural visualization.
He studied architecture at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, following years of training in drawing and painting from an early age. His professional work subsequently led him into architectural visualization, including establishing and leading the visualization department at Herzog & de Meuron in Basel in 2010, before founding his own Budapest-based studio, Aron Lorincz Ateliers, in 2014.
Alongside this practice, Lőrincz increasingly returned his focus to painting, bringing together his experience of traditional image-making and contemporary digital processes. His recent work explores constructed realities, familiar objects and quiet spaces through oil painting.
Not the same person as the Budapest painter of the same name (Áron Lőrincz, born 1985), who exhibits with the Longtermhandstand gallery.
